Marmaris to Datça A Mini Yacht Adventure with Sea&B

Dear sea lovers, as the Sea&B family, we are excited to share our incredible yacht charter journey from Marmaris to Datça. Since the owner of our company is a yacht captain, we didn’t need to hire one—what we call a bareboat charter in sailing terms. We hope this article provides useful insights and experiences for fellow sailors planning a similar adventure.

To enjoy the bays at their most peaceful, we chose to sail in autumn, as the Aegean bays are packed with boat charter enthusiasts during the peak summer months. Setting sail from Marmaris, we embarked on a 6-night, 7-day journey, returning to our starting point. For those looking to charter a yacht in Marmaris, we highly recommend the boat we used for this trip with as a Sea&B family…

Day 1: Setting Sail from Marmaris to Bozukkale

With a crew of five, we set off on a Friday after stocking up on provisions, planning our route, and making the necessary preparations. Our goal was to sail with minimal engine use, relying on the wind to take us to Datça. As planned, we reached Palamutbükü on the 4th evening and spent a night anchored off the coast. The following morning, we explored Knidos Ancient City, stayed another night at sea, and then began our return journey.

Our first stop was Çiftlik Bay. A key detail for travelers: there is cell phone reception here, which is not the case in every bay. We didn’t stay long, taking only a short break before continuing. On the northeastern side of the bay, boats can anchor at 4-6 meters depth on a sandy seabed, or you can tie up at one of the few restaurants’ docks.

By evening, we arrived at Bozukkale in Marmaris, where we anchored for the night. This bay has only one restaurant, and it is inaccessible by land. Electricity is generated by the restaurant’s generator, and the toilet is on top of the hill, offering breathtaking sunrise views. Freshly baked bread is available in the morning for breakfast. If you dock at the restaurant’s pier, be prepared to negotiate docking fees, as they can be expensive.

Day 2: Söğüt Bay – The Octopus Paradise

The next morning, we set sail for Söğüt bay, a region famous for its octopus dishes. Several seafood restaurants offer docking facilities, but during the high season, you must reserve a spot in advance. To dock, you must dine at the restaurant you book with. There is a small grocery store in the village, but not enough to stock up on large provisions. However, restaurants provide showers for visitors.

One of the most remarkable sights here was the fresh octopus fishing—when restaurants ran out of stock, staff rushed to the sea with sticks to catch more octopuses on the spot! 🐙

Day 3: Bozburun & Dirsek Bükü

Next, we headed to Bozburun, where we had to navigate carefully—the waters between the islands are very shallow. We even saw a jet ski getting stuck in the sand, and we helped rescue it.
After a quick meal, we set sail again for Dirsek Bükü, also known as Ağıl Bay. While it’s shallow, it features Atabol Rock, which requires careful maneuvering.

Days 4-5: Exploring Datça’s Beautiful Bays

Sailing towards Datça, we explored:
✔️ Cennet Bay
✔️ Selimiye
✔️ İnbükü Bay
We made sure to restock at every stop, as five people on a boat means endless food and drinks! 🍽️🍷
In Selimiye, there is a municipal pier and even two Migros supermarkets. We refilled our fresh water supply, which cost 25 TL per ton in 2021—though prices may have changed since then.

Day 6: Knidos Ancient City – A Night Under the Stars

Finally, we reached Knidos Ancient City, where we spent one night anchored. This well-protected bay shielded us from the storm outside, though we could still hear the roaring winds behind the mountain all night. Sleeping under the soft glow of the ancient city lights was a magical experience.

The next morning, we faced no wind but rough, rolling waves, making breakfast preparation a challenge! Despite normally not feeling seasick, I had to step outside for fresh air several times while preparing our meal.

Returning to Marmaris
As we sailed back to Marmaris, we all agreed—this trip must be repeated as soon as possible! It was a fun-filled, adventure-packed yacht charter, complete with plenty of laughter, exploration, and endless good times.
